Do you need a TEFL certificate for VIPTeacher?
Plan on having one before your first class. VIPTeacher lists teaching certification (e.g. TEFL/TESOL) among its "ideal referrals", and the certificate is verified at the "Certificate & open slots" stage. That stage comes before your first class.
A TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or TESOL certificate is a short course, often 120 hours, that covers how to teach English to non-native speakers.
VIPTeacher's referral page says: if you're not sure you qualify, apply anyway and their recruiting team will assess fit. For the full hiring process, see the VIPTeacher guide.
I got my 120-hour TEFL certificate in 2019, before I applied, and VIPTeacher accepted it without question.
When is a TEFL certificate worth buying?
When a company you want to work for requires one, or you might teach elsewhere later. Requirements differ a lot between online companies:
- Cambly: Not required. Cambly's help center says a teaching certificate is helpful but not required to apply. (source, checked September 29, 2026)
- Novakid: Required. Novakid's job post asks for an international certificate (TESOL, TEFL, TEYL, DELTA, CELTA, or similar). (source, checked September 29, 2026)
If you might teach for other companies or abroad, check what those employers ask for before you choose a course.
What should you check before paying for a TEFL?
Check the hours, who accredits it, the total cost, how long you get, and the refund policy.
- Hours. 120 hours is a common standard.
- Accreditation. Some courses are on a government register (for example the UK's Ofqual register). Many are "accredited" by private bodies that aren't government regulators. Neither guarantees a job.
- Total cost. Some courses charge separately for the certificate itself.
- Access time. Some courses expire after 60 or 90 days.
- Refunds. Some courses give no refund at all once you enroll.
